On Friday March 8th, the Glenbrook North Spartans competed at the Boys Sequoit Showdown at D117’s incredible field house with a 200m track. The first event of the evening was the 4x800m relay in which our relay was led off by Jonah Howard (Jr) who ran a solid 2:24.3 at the front of the chase pack. Howard then handed off to Ben Vishnevskiy (Sr) who ran the fastest split of the relay with a 2:23.2 before he handed off to Maxim Djits (So). Djits pushed through some major achilles pain and ran a 2:27.9. He then handed off to Ben Gricius (Jr) who anchored with a 2:25.5 and finished off our relay with a time of 9:41.1 placing them in 9th out of 12 teams.

The next event up was the 3200 meters. Competing in this event was Matthew Rubin (Sr) seeded 5th and Cormick Buti (Jr) seeded 7th, both running in the fast heat. After the gun went off both runners went right to the back of the lead pack using them to get out fast. As the leaders pulled away, Rubin and Buti stuck together and kept pushing while they took turns running ahead of each other to help to pull the other along. They went through the mile mark around 5:10, then Buti moved ahead of Rubin. Shortly after Rubin surged and caught back up, using his momentum to create a bigger gap. Buti battled, trying to stick with Rubin. Going through their final two laps Buti was able to close the gap by a good amount, but it just wasn’t enough to catch back up to Rubin. Both runners finished with all time PR’s: Rubin running a 6 second PR with a 10:21.8 and a 5th place finish and Buti running an impressive 33-second PR with a time of 10:27.4 and a 6th place finish out of 25 runners. Rubin ran almost completely even splits going a 5:11 second mile which is truly an impressive feat.

The next distance event of the night was the 800 meter run. Our two competitors were Hayato Majoros (Jr), in his first race back after the swim season, and Evan Bueno (So) who were both seeded towards the front of the second heat. After the gun went off Majoros went to lead immediately, staying right on the shoulder of the leader while Bueno stayed close on his tail. After about a lap or so with the pack continuing to work together, Bueno starts to fall off the leaders as they, along with Majoros, start to pick up the pace. As they went into the bell lap another runner took the lead from Majoros and started to create some space in between them. But as he rounded the final curve Majoros found another gear and flew past him to win his heat by less than a half second with a time of 2:11.95 and a new season PR. Bueno finished strong not too far behind with a respectable time of 2:19.9. Majoros finished in 8th overall and Bueno was 18th out of 35 total athletes competing in the 800.

Finally after a few more events, it was time for the 1600 meter run. Racing this for Glenbrook North was Tucker Roth (Jr) and Joseph Considine (Sr). These boys raced a tough race against some very fast competitors. The race split apart pretty early on into a front pack and a chase pack. Roth got stranded in the middle of the two and spent more than half of his race by himself. Considine went out a little bit more conservatively and stuck with the front of the chase pack and was able to close the gap on Roth a lot before the finish. Neither competitor ran a PR but they both continued to prove their abilities with yet another sub 5 performance. Roth ran a 4:54.5 with a 7th place finish and Considine ran a 4:58.5 and finished 10th out of 33 competitors.

Overall the Spartans tied for 6th place with Lakes High school out of a 17 team field. And that was without John Irhke (Sr) and with two DQs in the 60 meter dash.
