Congratulations to our freshman team who won the CSL Freshman Conference Meet on Monday, March 11th, at Glenbrook South High School!
The first event for our freshman was the 4x800 meter relay. The Spartans were led off by Jack Reynolds (Fr) who ran the fastest split of the relay, and got them into great positioning with a 2:21.5 and a new PR. He then handed off to Ray Zenimoto (Fr) who followed up with a strong 2:26.3 and then Marcus Christiansen (Fr) after that, with a 2:35.1 which was a PR for him. Finally Christiansen handed it off to their anchor leg, Charlie Beazley (Fr) who closed with a speedy 2:22.3 and got a 2nd place finish for the relay in a final time of 9:38.3.
The following race was the 3200 meter run and there was only one Spartan competitor in this race, Nico Grady (Fr). Grady got out to a solid start and spent the majority of his race running with the front pack. Grady went through his mile split at around a 5:32, and was on pace for a huge PR. Over the next 800 meters Grady fell off of the front pack, and then as he came by the start line where Coach Vincent was, he surged back up and closed in on the pack once again. Going into the last 200 meters, Grady was behind the front pack he had been chasing the whole second half. But Grady found an extra gear and turned on his kick, blazing past the pack for a 2nd place finish and 16 second PR with a time of 11:15.2.
Next up was the 800 meter run and for Glenbrook North our very own Sam Epstein (Fr) competed in this event. Epstein went out with a strong start right up with the leaders of the race. He kept his pace going strong, constantly being pressured by many guys right on his heels. Going into his last laps, Epstein paid for his aggressive start and struggled to find his kick to finish off his race. But in spite of that he still finished strong and ran a solid 2:17.3 with a 3rd place finish.
Last up was the 1600 meter run, and again there was only one Spartan competing, Naoto Majoros (Fr), fresh out of his successful varsity swim season. Majoros ran an impressive race despite having lost not one, but both of his shoes around the halfway point in his race. He ran even splits for his 800s, about 2:40 for both. Majoros still managed to push through and he finished in 9th with a solid 5:20.3.
Overall the freshman put on a stellar performance and won the meet with a total of 100 points. They won by 17 points, which is more than some of the teams even scored themselves. A huge shout out to the field events, where they placed 1st and 2nd in Pole Vault, 2nd and 3rd in Long Jump and another 1st and 2nd in Triple Jump.
Spartan Of The Meet- Matthew Park (he helped earn 24 points for the team, almost a quarter of the entire teams score)
