Spartan Relays- 4/26/24
Cormick Buti
4/26/2024
On Friday, April 26th 2024, Glenbrook North hosted the Spartan Relays invite in some seriously hazardous weather conditions including some heavy rain and wind. The first event up was the 4x800 meter relay. Lead of leg for the Spartans was Ben Gricius (Jr) who got out into good positioning and pushed through the rain and wind to a respectable split of 2:18. Gricius handed off to Evan Bueno (So) who did his best to keep them with the leaders. Bueno split a 2:21 before handing off to Sam Epstein (Fr). As the rain continued to batter the competitors, Epstein managed to tie his PR and split a 2:14 before handing off to anchor leg, Ray Zenimoto (Fr). Bringing home the relay, Zenimoto pushed himself and closed in a 2:17. This finished the relay in 3rd with a time of 9:12.1.
The next event was the Distance Medley Relay for which the wind and rain picked up even more right before the gun went off. Leading off on the 1200 leg of the relay was Cormick Buti (Jr). Going out in the lead hard, almost like an 800, Buti battles with a kid from Stevenson who takes the lead from him after a lap. Buti manages to come back in the last 200 and hand the baton off in first splitting a 3:29. Matteo Gatchalian (Jr) was up next on the 400, and he created lots of space between himself and second place, splitting a 56 before handing off to Hayato Majoros (Jr). Majoros was running the 800 and with no competition was able to cruise a 2:14 and then hand off to John Ihrke (Sr) on the 1600 to bring it home. Because of the large lead Ihrke was able to cruise his 1600 and bring it home with a final 200 fast finish, splitting a 4:50 coming in at 1st place. (No overall time because the timing tent blew over during the race).
The final distance event of the evening was the 4x1600 meter relay. They ran this event as an open race instead of in actual relay format which allowed all of the guys to actually have people to run with. Tucker Roth (Jr) and Matthew Rubin (Sr) worked together to both go sub 5 with Roth running a 4:53 and Rubin not too far behind with a 4:56. With some separation between packs, Joseph Considine (Sr) managed to run a 5:04 and then a few more seconds behind was Naoto Majoros (Fr) who came through with a 5:09. Collective time put the Spartans in 3rd with an overall time of 20:03.5.
Despite the harsh conditions everyone performed very well helping the team to place second place with an overall great performance.
